Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) – The Open Division of the Regional Golden Gloves Championships saw the Virginia-North Carolina team dominate the squad from DC/Maryland/Delaware as they captured five of the seven bouts Saturday at the Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD.
Jalonte Cole (Burke, VA) upset World Series of Boxing participant Tyrek Irby (Oxon Hill, MD) to claim the 141lb. division, while Troy Isely (Alexandria, VA) knocked off two-time regional Golden Gloves champ Tavon Body (Burtonsville, MD) to win the 165lb class.
In other action, rising amateur standout Javon Campbell (Raleigh, NC) won the 123lb class defeating Hector Soto (Salisbury, MD) in the open division, while Nicholas Sullivan (Portsmouth, VA) won the 132-Pound division by defeating Tommy Avelar (Germantown, MD) and Ray Barlow (Raleigh, NC) claimed the 152lb division with his triumph over Maiwak Dagoot (Bowie, MD).
Gene Pllana (Hagerstown, MD) defeated Jonathan Housand (Virginia Beach, VA) to win the 178lbs and help the DC/Maryland/Delaware region get a win, while Cortez Dunston (Baltimore, MD) garnered the 201+ lb title with a tough victory over Leander Overby (Hampton, VA).
