BY: Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) Ismael Villarreal continues to impress and turn heads as he advanced to the New York Daily News Golden Gloves semis with a devastating first-round TRO over Edwin Ramirez Friday night at Holy Cross High School in Flushing, New York.
Villarreal (John’s Gym) has been far and away one of the most dangerous 165-pound novice fighter’s in this year’s tourney and he showed it again when he took care of an overmatched Ramirez (El Maestro BC), who took a sound beating, highlighted by a nasty left hook he absorbed.
The humble Villarreal is one step away from Barclays Center and really looks like the favorite to win gold in 2015.
Bruce Carrington (Atlas Cops N Kids) simply outworked Ray Cuadrado Jr. (Brotherhood BC) and advanced to the 123-pound open championship with a tough hard-fought 3-0 triumph as he used superior hand speed to pick up the win.
The tournament continues Monday at Worldwide BC in the Bronx with semifinal bouts in 125-pound and 141-pound female divisions and in the 132-pound, 178-pound and super heavyweight novices and the 114-pound open class.
