Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) – As week one of the New York Daily News Golden Gloves came to a close, Christopher Timberlake a local favorite brought the house down at the Freeport Boxing Club Friday night with a thrilling win of a very game and tough Jerry Rodriguez.

There were 12 bouts that highlighted the action in the 152-pound novice division, with Timberlake seizing control of a spirited contest against Rodriguez (Green Fitness Studio).

A Freeport Boxing Club product, Timberlake simply outworked his stronger opponent late in the fight to get the tough win.

“Just by his size and build and his previous fights, I expected this. I knew I couldn’t give him a lot of space to operate, so I stayed on him,” said Timberlake.

The hard-charging 22-year-old took over the bout in the third and final round, as he threw a hard straight right that drew blood from the nose of Rodriguez, which ignited a wonderful flurry of action in the middle of the ring as the bout came to a close.

The P.C. Richard “Boxer of the Night” went to Kalief Lindo of Church Street Club, who dominated his opponent Joseph Carney of CEA Gym for three lop-sided rounds. Lindo, who is a sharp puncher, displayed great defense en route to the win, as he knocked down Carney in the second round.

The next Golden Gloves events will take place on Wednesday at St. Andrew Avellino in Flushing, New York. First bout is slated to go off at 7:30PM.
