When you think Boxing and the name Ray Robinson comes up, you think of Sugar Ray Robinson one of the greatest of all-time. A middleweight champ who packed a punch and had wonderful footwork. Well, there is a new Robinson coming up and his name is the “New Ray” Robinson. A young and fiesty figther who fights out of Philadelphia. The “New Ray” Robinson won the interim NABA welterweight title when he dismantled Albert Morales in a ten round unanimous decision last week at the “Champs at the Chase” in Wilmington, Delaware.
Robinson proved to much for the pesky Morales winning on all three score cards, 100-89, 99-91, and 98-91, as he captured the belt in front of a crowd of close to 2,000, which included Hall-of-Fame Delaware resident Michael Spinks.
Prior to the bout, Robinson was calm and relaxed and never thought about the pressure of being a figther from Philly.
“I am trying to create my own name and I am just having fun doing it, there is no added pressure for me because I am a boxer from Philly,” he told me prior to the bout.
If you enjoy boxing, you have to see Robinson in person. He has smooth feet and power in his punches and that was never more evident when he floored Morales in the closing seconds of the first round with a massive counter right uppercut. He wore down the tough Morales after that and showed to many at ringside that he is an upcoming boxer.
He is ranked 20th in the welterweight division in the U.S. and he is being groomed by Champs Management Group and Dave Tiberi. He is in good hands and should continue to get some marque fights. It will not be long until he is on the undercard of perhaps HBO or Showtime, but for now the “New Ray Robinson” is making “Sugar Ray” proud.
