BY: Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) Yazmin Rivas will look to defend her WBC Bantamweight World Title when she clashes with Celina Salazar over 10-rounds at the Auditorio Municipal Fausto Gutierrez Moreno, Tijuana, Mexico Saturday on a very heavy card promoted by Fernando Beltran’s Promociones Zanfer.
The 27-year-old Rivas (31-8, 9ko’s) has rebounded nicely sine suffering a split-decision loss against Jessica Gonzalez for the interim WBC World female bantamweight title in 2012. She fought three times in 2014 — winning all of them — and has shown over recent years she can grind it out over ten rounds.
Rivas is a smart boxer that gets in and out and has shown she can take a punch as well.
Salazar (6-1-2, 1ko) has won two straight since losing a six-round majority decision to Melinda Cooper 2012. She fought only once in 2013 and 2014. This will be her second 10-rounder of her career, with the first coming against Ana Julaton in her only bout of 2013.
Clearly this is the biggest step up of the native of San Antonio’s career and a win would make for some interesting talk of future opponents. Once potential bout could be with the winner of Noemi Bosques/Nydia Felicaino bout Friday night in Tampa if Salazar pulls off the upset.
