Pugh’s height, reach could be difference against Chieng in NY Golden Gloves Finals

BY: Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) The 88th New York Daily News Finals are set and the action begins Wednesday night with 12 bouts at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York, starting with the 125lb. women’s final which will pit Jennifer Chieng against Janice Pugh.

Chieng (Gleason’s Gym) lost to Christina Cruz in last year’s 125lb. final and the 28-year-old will have to figure out a way early on how to get inside against a taller Pugh.

The 5″3 Chieng, who started her boxing career in Pittsburgh, has more experience then Pugh, with 21 career fights.

However, Pugh’s 5″10 height advantage might be the difference in this one. She has used her reach and range brilliantly in this year’s tourney and with just four amateur fights under her belt, will be looking to pull off the upset.

Chieng was also runner-up in 2015 Boxing Elite National Championships last January where she lost to Cruz.
