BY: Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) Janice Pugh went out and dominated her fellow gym mate Nicole Russell Monday night at the World Wide Boxing Club in the Bronx, New York and in the process advanced to the 125lb. finals of the New York Daily News Golden Gloves.
Pugh (The Wat) was able to use her jab and her 5’10 reach to keep her distance and advance to the finals at the Barclay’s Center April 1st. Pugh, who is a model, made it an ugly affair at times as she was able to get inside and punish Russell en route to a 3-0 decision.
She ate some punches during a very competitive and spirited bout and was able to withstand Russell’s mix of uppercuts and punches.
“I had a fat lip for the call, but lipstick helped that out,” said Pugh to the New York Daily News after her win. “Most people find it fascinating that I also box.”
In other action, Jennifer Cheing (NYAC) needed a round or so before she picked it up and felt much more comfortable against Viviana Melgar (Glen Cove BC) as she rolled to a 3-0 decision to advance to her second straight finals in the other 125-pound women’s semifinal in a feisty bout.
Angel L. Ruiz (Yonkers PAL) showed some serious flashes of skill and talent on her way to a 3-0 win against Aridis Duran (El Maestro BC) to advance to the 114-pound open championship on April 2nd.
