Opening day of National Golden Gloves in the books

Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) – The National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions kicked off on Tuesday in Salt Lake City, Utah and the DC region was well represented with several big wins.

The DC region won two of four bouts that they fought in and leading the way was Troy Isley, who won his 165lb. clash over Marcus Johnson by a score of 5-0. The native of Alexandria, VA, used his jab early on and scored with relative ease courtesy of body shots over the Wisconsin native.

Javon Campbell, an outstanding boxer from Raleigh, NC won his opening contest thanks to a 3-2 decision over New Jersey’s Tyrone Arzeho in a 132lb. contest, while Burke, VA boxer Jalonte Cole suffered a 5-0 setback to Vergil Ortiz out of Texas during their 141lb fight.

Johnathan Surratt of Fort Washington, MD lost his contest at 201 Pounds by a 4-1 score to Tristan James of Iowa to round out the DC region action.
