BY: Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) USA Boxing’s elite women wasted little time making noise as lightweight Mikaela Mayer won a unanimous decision over Belarus’ Ala Yarshevich in her debut on Tuesday at the Strandja Boxing tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Mayer, won gold in the lightweight division, also claimed the first spot in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Women’s Boxing, was the line U.S. boxer to participate on opening night. With her win, she advanced to Wednesday’s competition.
Three of her teammates will see action as well. Flyweight Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, Texas) will take on host nation and tough boxer Zlatislava Chukanova of Bulgeria, while the decorated Christina Cruaz (New York, NY) will tangle against Norway’s Camilla Johnson in a bantamweight affair.
Middleweight Tika Hemingway (Pittsburgh, PA.) will go up against China’s Qian Li and light welterweight Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) will step into the ring Thursday when she faces China’s Wenlu Yang.
Ellis and Hemingway each took home bronze medals in the 2015 USA Boxing National Championships.
