Maryland’s Russell loses controversial and heartbreaking decision in Rio

Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) – Capitol Heights, MD, native Gary Antuanne Russell’s journey to Gold in Rio came to a crashing halt, as he lost a very tough and controversial decision to Fazliddin Gaibnazarov of Uzbekistan in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on Tuesday during the quarterfinals of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Russell fought a very sound bout, especially in the first round as he applied a ton of pressure against Gaibnazarov.

However, the judges scored the first stanza in favor of Gaibnazarov, who began the second round by avoiding Russell’s forward attack. He was warned for not engaging but the referee never deducted any points.

In the third round, Russell, who suffered a cut over his right eye in the second round, threw and landed solid punches and pushed hard late to steal the round and the fight. However, he lost by a 2-1 decision.
