Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) Despite getting floored in the second round, Abel Lopez was able to use his jab wisely en route to a tough split-decision win over Pedro Ramos in their 123lbs. novice-semifinal bout of the 2015 New Jersey Golden Gloves tournament Saturday at the Global Boxing Gym in North Bergen, New Jersey.
Lopez (L.B. Gleasons) will face Victor Torres (Goss & Goss) Friday night during the novice/sub-novice finals in Paramus, New Jersey.
Against Ramos, Lopez started off strong as he went right to the body in the opening round. He pushed the pace the rest of the way, pushing back Ramos (Jersey City Rec). The southpaw Lopez was content with picking and choosing his spots by setting everything up with his jab, which was the difference in this one.
In the second round, Ramos scored a nice knockdown when he connected with a sweeping right hand, prompting a standing-eight. The shot looked to be a glancing blow, but did just enough to cause Lopez to lose his balance and hit the canvas. The rest of the round, saw Ramos stalk Lopez, who seemed hurt and a little dazed. It was a close round, but JMB gave it to Ramos even without the standing-eight.
In the third round, Lopez started to head hunt a bit, but was scoring with ease as he applied pressure from the start of the stanza. Ramos, though, took the shots and tried to get inside, but without much success. Lopez finished the round with a gorgeous flurry, highlighted by a left hook up top that rocked Ramos. That late push swayed the judges as he got the close decision.
“Estoy muy feliz en este momento,” said Lopez after the win.
JMB scored it in favor of Lopez as well.
