Judah makes return to ring; set to take on Hevinson Herrera

Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) Former two-division champion Zab Judah makes his long return to the ring when he takes on Hevinson Herrera in a slated 10-round super lightweight bout Thursday September 10th at The Space at Westbury in Westbury, Long Island.

Judah (42-9, 29ko’s) has not fought since 2013 when he dropped a 12-round unanimous decision against Paulie Malignaggi back in 2013. That bout was for the vacant NABF welterweight title and despite starting fast in that one, Judah faded during the middle rounds and late to suffer his third defeat in his last four fights.

The 37-year-0ld Judah will get a chance to knock off the rust against a journeymen fighter in Columbia’s Herrera (18-11-1, 12ko’s), who has dropped seven of his last 11 fights. Herrera does not even come close to having the same background in the ring as Judah does, but an upset Thursday would be the biggest of the 31-year-old’s career.

Judah moved up in his career and there was talk that he should have stayed at 140 early on. Any notion of him facing guys at 140 might get thrown out the window now, since his skills have diminished over the last several years.

In other action, Steve Geffrard (12-2, 7ko’s) will take on Cory Cummings (18-9-1, 13ko’s) in a scheduled eight-round cruiserweight contest, while hard-hitting super middleweight Joe Greene (26-1, 17ko’s) tangles against an opponent to be named.

Greens is coming off a third-round TKO win over Guy Parker back in June, which marked his first fight in two years.

Jesus Gutierrez (13-0-1, 4ko’s) will be in action as well when he takes on an opponent to be named in a six-round super lightweight contest, while Dave Meloni (3-1) goes up against Micah Branch (2-15-1), who has dropped seven straight and 12 of his last 17, in a four-round super featherweight bout.

Bienvenido Diaz (2-0, 2ko’s) will take on Benjamin Burgos (2-12-1) in a four-round super featherweight tilt, while Samuel Teah (6-1, 2ko’s) clashes against Rashad Bogar (4-5-1, 2ko’s) over four rounds.

The always popular Tommy “Razor” Rainone (23-6-1, 5ko’s) will meet Francisco Javier Reza (15-14, 12ko’s) in a six-round middleweight fight.

In a featured female bout, top-ranked super featherweight Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (24-1-1, 18ko’s) clashes with South Carolina’s Angel Gladney (8-11-1, 6ko’s) in a six-round bout.
