BY: Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) Qu’ran Olford was able to pull away late against Wesley Greer to capture the 145lb junior 16-year-old sub-novice title in just his first amateur bout at the New Jersey Golden Gloves Saturday at the Ike Williams Boxing Academy in Trenton, New Jersey.
Olford (Goss & Goss) had to battle in this one against Greer, but was able to separate himself midway through the second round and then closed it out in the third round.
“After the first round, I was tired a bit and I slowed down a bit but I was able to still keep the pressure on him,” Olford said.
Using superior hand speed and power, Olford connected with several big shots after a quiet first round. He was able to land some body shots, while mixing in wide lefts that were glancing blows.
However, they did enough to keep Greer off balance and guessing. The Elite Heat produce tried to get inside in the second round, but got caught several times with hooks up top. Greer, though, to his credit landed a gorgeous wild left hook that rocked Olford sending him flying against the ropes and prompting a standing-eight count in the third round.
But despite that gorgeous scoring blow, Greer was not able to land any more shots the rest of the way, as Olford closed out the final round with a nice flurry to hold on and win the title.
“I was working on that a bit at home and at the gym, letting my hands go and seeing what happens, and I get to bring a trophy home,” he concluded smiling.
