Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) Featherweight Evgeny Gradovich showed a ton of heart and grit as he gutted out a majority decision over hard-nosed Mexican Jesus Galicia, at the Centro Deportivo Boxing Unitres, in Picanya, Comunidad Valenciana, Spain on Friday night.
Gradovich (21-1-1, 9ko’s), who fresh off an eight-round split-decision win over Aldimar Silva Santos back in October after suffering the only loss of his career, came out slow and was reduced to a one-dimensional boxer against the tough Galicia, who was more active from the opening bell.
The action started to pick up in the third round, with Galicia being more active.
However, Gradovich settled in and made a couple of adjustments here and there but he seemed content banging with the Mexican.
The bout was tight the rest of the way with Gradovich landed more cleaner shots to the body, that also proved effective to edge the pesky Galicia.
Aided by his head coach Robert Garcia in his corner, Gradovich picked up the pace late, pressing the action against the more dangerous fighter on this night.
The judges saw it even (96-96), while the other two favored the Russian by scores of 99-93 and 96-94.
JMB scored it 96-94 for Gradovich.
Galicia falls to 13-9-1, with eight knockouts.
