BY: Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) Arnold Gonzalez advanced into the second round of the New York Daily News Golden Gloves tournament with a hard-fought and gutsy win over Abel Garcia Tuesday night at the Suffolk PAL in Brentwood, Long Island.
Gonzalez (Astro Fitness BC) showed he had the mental toughness and stamina to go the distance against a very game Garcia (4D Boxing) in a 141-pound novice affair.
It was a huge win for Gonzalez, who had Dennis Milton, a four-time Gloves champ in his corner for the bout, as he pushed the pace over three rounds and took it 3-0 on the scorecards. Milton will be inducted into the NY Golden Gloves Hall-of-Fame at the end of the tournament in April.
In other action, Kevin Anderson (Atlas Cops N Kids) looked very smooth at the onset against Ricardo Arrellanes (K2 BC). However, it was Arrellanes discipline and commitment to go to the body that wore down Anderson as he delivered two standing-eight counts to earn an impressive win in a 141-pound clash.
This might be Arrellanes’ year after he was put away in 2014 by Waris Aminy, who would go on and capture the 141-pound division championship.
The 88th annual Daily News Golden Gloves continues on Wednesday at the famed Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn.
