BY: Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) Jamie Dejesus and Kyle Collins made statements, while stable mates Saleem Kelly and Garrett Dugan each earned impressive wins as week seven of the New Jersey Golden Gloves wrapped up Saturday from the Ike Williams Boxing Academy in Trenton, New Jersey.
In a jam packed gym, amateur boxing fans were treated to 12 very entertaining and competitive bouts as the Garden State displayed some of the best young amateur boxers around.
With the finals just two weeks away, several boxers stepped up and showed they would be a force to be reckon with in the finals.
Jamie DeJesus (Ike & Randy) made quick work of Andy Betance (PAL) by scoring a vicious 1st-round TKO win in a 152lb. novice affair.
Dejesus right hook to the head against Betance, who was floored by the punch, earned him a share of the “Casanova Gloves Punch of the Night”. Dejesus would score another standing eight before his flurry late in round would force the referee to stop the action.
Dugan scored a gorgeous knockout courtesy of a textbook left hook to the body against Ronal Marvo (Nobull BB) to share the honors with DeJesus.
The rising boxing will meet Kyle Collins (Goss & Goss), who looked very sharp against a very tough and gritty Isaiah Costanon (Garden State Boxing).
The “Journeymen Boxing Fight of the Night” belonged to Kelly (Middletown PAL) and Isaiah Costanon (Garden State Boxing) as both boxers went toe-to-toe in a thrilling and back and forth affair. Kelly would come away with the very close split-decision win as well as Journeymen Boxing’s “Outstanding Boxer of the Night”.
