Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) After suffering just his second pro defeat, Philip Jackson Benson steps back in the ring when he tangles against Jinner Guerrero in a slated 10-round super middleweight bout Friday night at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
Benson (15-2, 14ko’s) saw his 12-fight winning streak come to an abrupt halt when he was floored in the sixth round against spoiler Darnell Boone back in April. The 30-year-old Benson was turning heads around boxing because of his vicious power and nasty knockouts, but found himself on the other end against the upset-minded Boone.
The native of Brooklyn tipped the scales at 169lbs, while Guerrero (8-5, 6ko’s) came in at 168.4lb.s The 33-year-old native of Esmeraldas, Ecuador has dropped two straight and four of six. He has been knocked out three times in his career.
The main event will pit Brandon Bennett against Jonathan Maicelo in a 10-round lightweight affair.
Bennett (19-1, 8ko’s) is a hot prospect out of Cincinnati, and he has won three straight since losing the vacant NABF super featherweight title and vacant WBO Inter-Continental super featherweight title to Francisco Vargas in 2013. Maicelo, who resides in North Bergen, New Jersey, by way of Peru, sports a 21-2 mark with 12 knockouts.
Maicelo is coming off a 12-round unanimous decision against Darleys Perez for the interim WBA World lightweight title last January.
Bennett weighed in at 135.6lbs, while Maicelo came in at 134.6lbs for their affair.
Lightweight Jamel Herring (12-0, 7 ko’s) will also be in action as he takes on Ariel Vasquez (12-8-2, 8 ko’s) as he looks to make it two straight wins after two straight defeats.
