Richard Quiñones (Journeymen Boxing) – The 90th edition of the famed New York Daily News Golden Gloves kicked off Monday night at a jam-packed B.B King Blues Club & Grill in Times Square, and the action did not disappoint the crowd on hand as seven bouts in the 165-pound open weight class saw action inside the ring.
The P.C. Richards Boxer of the Night went to Nikita Ababiy (Atlas Cops N Kids), who defeated Zacharias Bryant (Royals BC) thanks to a third-round TKO. Nikita opened the night going right to the body, then he connected with a gorgeous overhead right that connected and scored. In the second round, Nikita kept mixing in some body shots with stiff jabs and in the third round, the referee had seen enough, halting the action at 1:19 of the stanza.
Jimmy Baldwin (Morris Park BC) and Brett Pastore (Shippensburg BC) earned the Colony Pest Bout of the Night thanks in large part to their action packed back and fourth affair, which had the sell-out crowd on its feet. Baldwin would walk away with the unanimous decision in an entertaining affair.
The Empire Casino Punch of the Night came in the final bout courtesy of hard-puncher Ismael Villareal of John’s Gym, who stopped Jeremiah Maestre of Gleason’s Gym with a heavy straight right that wobbled Maestre, causing the ref to jump in and wisely stop the action.
Rest of the results are as followed: Blue- Dwayne Burchell (Westbury BC) def. Gold- Peter Goodman (John’s Gym) vs; Score: 4-1, while Blue- Digno Peralta (Unattached) def. Gold- Enmanuel Ledesma (John’s Gym) vs; Score: 5-0.
